CIVIL WAR SHIPS: Impact on the Future of the Navies

CIVIL WAR SHIPS: Impact on the Future of the Navies

Join us for a wonderful new addition to our Galleries. Reception will take place from 2-4PM on March 9th, 2019. Refreshments will be served. Special presentation by model builder and historian Steve Lund.

During the American Civil War, the CSS Virginia, a captured and rebuilt Union steam frigate formerly known as the Merrimac, engages the USS Monitor in the first battle between iron-fortified naval vessels in history.

The Confederate navy’s addition of iron plates to the captured USS Merrimac steam frigate temporarily made it an unstoppable force in the disputed waters of the Civil War. After seeing the Merrimac in action, the Union navy constructed its own ironclad, the USS Monitor. On March 8, 1862, the Virginia attacked a Union squadron of wooden-hulled vessels in Hampton Roads off the Virginia coast. The USS Congress, a frigate, and the USS Cumberland, a sailing sloop, were easily sunk by the Virginia, which suffered no noticeable damage. Late that night, the USS Monitor arrived in the area. With its deck nearly at the water level, the Monitor had an unassuming appearance, but it was a formidable match for the Confederate ironclad.

On March 9, the two vessels engaged each other, and both the Monitor and the Virginia suffered direct hits that failed to penetrate their iron shells. Finally, after four hours, a cannon blast from the Virginia hit the Monitor‘s pilothouse, temporarily blinding the ship’s captain, Union Lieutenant John L. Worden. The Virginia was thus allowed to escape to Norfolk, Virginia, and the Battle of the Ironclads ended in a draw. Two months later, the Virginia was trapped in Norfolk by advancing Union forces, and its Confederate crew blew up the fearful vessel rather than allow it to fall into Union hands.

SPEAKER SERIES: Richard Senate

SPEAKER SERIES: Richard Senate

“Oxnard's Literary Gift to the world, Mystery writer, lawyer, defender of the underdog, Erle Stanley Gardner”

Gardner passed the California Bar in 1911. He opened his first law office in Merced in 1917. In 1921, he became a member of the Ventura firm Sheridan, Orr, Drapeau, and Gardner.

He enjoyed litigation and the development of trial strategy but was otherwise bored by legal practice. In his spare time, he began writing for pulp magazines. He created many series characters for the pulps, including Ken Corning, crusading lawyer, crime sleuth, and archetype for his most successful creation, Perry Mason. While the Perry Mason novels did not delve into their characters lives very much, the novels were rich in plot detail which was reality-based and drawn from his own experience. Early on, he typed his stories himself, using two fingers, but later he dictated them to a team of secretaries.

Gardner remained with Sheridan, Orr, Drapeau, and Gardner until 1933, when The Case of the Velvet Claws, a Perry Mason story, was published. Much of that story is set at the historic Pierpont Inn, just down the road from his law office. In 1937, Gardner moved to Temecula, California, where he lived for the rest of his life. The success of the Mason series eventually ran to over 80 novels. In 1957, Perry Mason became a long-running CBS-TV series, starring Raymond Burr in the title role.

Biography

Mr. Richard Senate was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, until his father retired and moved to Ventura, California. Here he attended Ventura High School and Ventura Community College where he earned an AA Degree. He went on to Long Beach State University where he earned a degree in History. He did a years post grad work at UCSB Santa Barbara and attended the Archaeological Field School (out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) at San Antonio de Padua Mission. He became the site manager of the Albinger Archaeological Museum, the the Olivas Adobe Historic Site, both in Ventura. He gave tours of historic sites and acted as historian for the city of Ventura. He became interested in the paranormal after seeing a ghost and is the author of 23 books on the subject of ghosts. He is married to Debbie, a psychic, and they have three children and six grandchildren. They reside in Ventura where Mr. Senate continues to give tours, teach history, and write for several small newspapers and magazines, such as Fate. He also is a biographer of Erle Stanley Gardner, the creator of the fictional attorney, Perry Mason.

SPEAKER SERIES: Kiki Patsch "Beaches on the Edge"

CIMM welcomes Kiki Patsch as she speaks on the “Beaches on the Edge,” Wednesday, January 16th, 6:30PM. Refreshments are served and the lecture begins at 7PM. Free for CIMM Members, $7 non-members, $5 seniors/students and military personnel.

Dr. Patsch's past and current research focuses on coastal geomorphology and processes, shoreline hazard assessment, sediment budgets analysis, sea cliff and beach erosion, reductions in the natural supply of sediment to the coast, and coastal armoring along the California coast. Dr. Patsch is co-author of the book, Living with the Changing California Coast, published by the University of California Press, Berkeley which covers the processes and hazards associated with California’s geologically dynamic and heavily populated shoreline. As part of this book, Patsch developed a GIS for the entire coastline of California, mapping and taking inventory of such information as shoreline hazard level, shoreline armoring, sea cliff erosion rates, and shoreline environment. Through her work, Dr. Patsch aims to bridge the gap between policy makers, scientists, engineers, and private citizens on issues related to the coastal zone.

Dr. Kiki Patsch is currently developing regionally based, socially relevant research projects and programs with fellow faculty members as well as undergraduate students and pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of the dynamic coastal zone in the framework of environmental science and resource management. Our beaches and coastal environments are an important natural resource that needs to be studied and preserved. California’s beaches alone generate billions of dollars annually to California's economy, not to mention the US economy on a whole. With a dynamic sea level threatening to erode our beaches and sea cliffs, coastal zone planning and resource management will need our attention in the coming years.

Maarten Platje: The Early History of the United States Navy

Maarten Platje: The Early History of the United States Navy

Working professionally for over thirty years, Maarten Platje’s paintings reveal his ability to depict historic topics with a stunning level of detail. Dedicated to marine paintings, Platje’s carefully-orchestrated compositions are created from an assembly of several old pictures, old drawings and ship models discovered at antique stores or placed at his disposal from private collections. Maarten Platje has been exhibiting his signature maritime art paintings since 1986.

He studied at the Ars Aemula Naturae Art Academy in Leiden, in addition to his attendance at several artistic courses and studies. Upon graduating, he spent part of his youth as a sailor before devoting himself to the painting of ships; this period certainly contributed to his ability to transform his impressions and observations into highly accurate and lively marine paintings.

Today and during his professional career, Maarten Platje’s impressive body of work traveled internationally, and has acclaimed him several achievements. Some of which include, an official invitation by the Royal Dutch Navy to embark on a frigate during NATO operations in the Mediterranean waters, and an invitation to exhibit his work at the yearly international commercial maritime manifestation ‘Europort’ in Amsterdam.

Monsters of the Deep: Fact or Fiction

Monsters: Alive and Well and Living in the Deep

That newspaper headline says it all. It could be 2018, 1918, 1818, or if daily newsprint had been invented, 318 BC in Greece. Countless headlines such as this reach back hundreds of years, and the story is essentially the same. Some “sea monsters” are both age-old and current, yet we still know little about them. Do Monsters actually lurk in the deep? Well, from Jan 9th to March 18th, come by the Maritime to find out.  “Monsters of the Deep: Fact or Fiction” is the next exciting exhibit in the Farr Gallery at Channel Islands Maritime Museum. Works by local artisans, images and stories of the deep will be featured; a historical background for deep-sea exploration and an ecological perspective on life in the ocean’s depths. Family friendly – great for all! The public is invited to the opening reception January 9, 2019, 5:30-7:30 PM.
